Persia Zuur
Persia Zuur is a political insider and Socialist Walloon from the nation of Belgium. He has worked on the Belgian political scene since the early 1980s, mainly promoting Wallonian interests. Wallonia is the southern, French-speaking region of Belgium. Zuur is known as a behind-the-scenes man, and has never held an official political post in Belgium; instead, he has worked as a political consultant. Recently, he has worked with Marie Arena and Paul Magnette, both of whom currently hold posts in the Belgian government. Zuur has a history of negotiating deals between parties and organizational leaders. Some have accused him of corruption, in particular during a labour negotiation with the public transportation union of Brussels in 1987 and again during a walkout at a cement factory in southern Belgium in the early 90s. In both cases, Flemish leaders accused Zuur of inappropriately stepping in to defend the workers (and, it was implied, pay off the politicians) - but charges never arose in either case. More recently, Zuur has attempted to mend some of the differences between Wallonian and Flemish factions of the Belgian political spectrum. The two regions have been under increased stress in recent months, with rumours floating about that the nation could split into two separate entities. Prime Minister Yves Leterme, appointed to the position after a lengthy period of political impasse earlier in the year in which there was no Prime Minister, attempted to resign from his post in July - but King Albert II denied his request, instead forming a coalition to attempt to resolve the crisis. Zuur has worked behind the scenes in an effort to help negotiate a deal directly with some of the Flemish Separatists involved in the movement. Zuur is a member of the Walloon Socialist Party. He was born in 1967 in Brussels. |
